Myanmar Burma Travel and Tour information

Welcome to the Informed Travel Project website, created by the AIUSA NYC Myanmar Action Team. The team comprises volunteer members of Amnesty International USA (AI) local groups 9, 11, 27, and 280 in New York City, which have been working for the release of Individuals at Risk (IARs; formerly known as Prisoners of Conscience), people being held under brutal conditions in the Union of Myanmar (Burma), solely for the peaceful expression of their beliefs.

The Informed Travel Project was created as a way of reaching out to people interested in traveling to Myanmar, and to U.S.-based travel and tour operators and organizations sponsoring travel there. We encourage travelers to become as fully-informed as they can about Myanmar, and we urge travel professionals to provide their clients with realistic information. This website provides useful information and resources for travel professionals and for people interested in visiting Myanmar.

The cyclone that slammed areas of Myanmar in May 2008 brought worldwide attention on the inhumanity of the country's ruling junta; it may even have brought renewed interest in the country as a travel destination. As members of Amnesty International, we take no position as to whether travel to Myanmar is desirable or not; indeed, among people working to advance human rights in Myanmar, there is a range of opinion about whether tourism is beneficial or detrimental (see our "Should You Go?" page for a more extensive discussion). We do believe very strongly that it is essential that anyone inquiring about travel to Myanmar be given a balanced and reasonably comprehensive picture of conditions there, and we sincerely hope that people who do visit will return from their travels as advocates for the advancement of human rights for the people of Myanmar.
